Child Counseling & PCIT: What You Need to Know
PCIT works differently from traditional child counseling. It involves observation and therapist-to-parent guidance: A therapist watches the parent and child interact and coaches the parent, using in-ear audio connection, on what to do and say in real time.
PCIT typically includes two phases:
Child-Directed Interaction: This phase focuses on improving the relationship between parent and child through positive communication and attachment.
Parent-Directed Interaction: This phase focuses on teaching the parent how to deliver consistent, calm, and clear communication while setting boundaries and expectations.
The goal of PCIT isn’t to simply correct the child’s behavior but to reimagine the parent-child relationship so that it’s stronger, more constructive, and resilient. It teaches parents to become the transformative force in their children’s lives. Skills are actively practiced in sessions, which fosters confidence in moms and dads.
